Northern Italy’s romance plays the setting of The Luzhin Defence, a film loosely based on Vladimir Nabokov’s novel. The film depicts an international chess championship set at a spectacular villa on Lake Como during the 1920’s. The Phantom Menace film location: Queen Amidala’s palace on ’Naboo’: Palazzo Reale, Caserta, Italy. The baroque palace, built in 1752, for King Charles III of Naples to rival France’s Versailles, is open to visitors. Indeed, it was used to represent the ‘Parisian’ palace of Louis XVIII ( Orson Welles) in Sergei Bondarchuk ’s 1970 Production designer Nelson Coates and his team transformed the building near-completely.
